I actually sent my views to the bbc on this one; it's not something I do regularly, I just think it's a bit irresponsible to make such a fuss of what the chinese have done here when we almost refuse to put "ugly" woman on our magazines, and we wouldn't put "ugly" women on the television as newsreaders. The Chinese have stated that it was done for theatrical purposes, and whilst it's somewhat predictable that the real reason is becxause the "ugly" girl wasn't perfect enough for the ceremony in the eyes of the communist government, going by what information we have been given I can't say they've done anything wrong. It's probably beszt to consider however, that the ceremony would have been criticized in the same way if the "ugly" girl had been used in the first place.

(Of course, I'm completely against the idea of those with more influence deciding what is pretty and what is not.)
