I am wanting to sign up for guitar lessons, but i think i would rather play bass. but my dad says once you learn guitar you can play bass because it is the same minus one or two strings (depending on kind). i already play a bass instrument, the tuba.... but thats totally different. let me know what you think i should pick up first...

Tuba players rock. :P

On topic, my personal preference would be the bass guitar out of those two, but I think it comes down to your choice. If you'd like to play more in the background and tie the drums with the other instruments, play bass. If you want to be the shredding guitarist pulling the solos, pick guitar. Don't just think that the guitarist is more important; I've heard extremely great bassists than shine even more than the lead guitarist.

I'd rather play the drums instead of either of them though. ;D

Start with the guitar you can always pick up bass later, I used to play 6 stringed electric bass in my garage band, Having now experience in bass only on guitar.

I play the guitar, but I think you should pick bass since it has less complex techniques. You could always grab the guitar later on.

between tuba and susa? yea shure
the tuba is more quiet and used for concert bands and it sits on ure lap/chair
the susa is louder and used for marching bands and it sits on ure left shoulder

If you get decent guitar will get you laid, bass will not unless your band is really, really good. Bassists are more in demand than guitarists though, and drummers are like gold dust.

Your dad is right. You really need to learn the basics before starting to learn to play bass. The strings are much thicker than normal guitar ones, so it would be pretty painful if you jumped right in without knowing how to play guitar to start off with.

Coming from a bassist that's a load of balls. It's going to be painful whichever you play, you're going to get blisters and such and it will hurt, but after a few months you'll develop callus and it wont hurt anymore. You get used to it.

I started learning bass without knowing how to play guitar, i've never taken lessons and i'm one of the better bassists i know. Not the best, but better than quite a few. Taking lessons will definately help, though. After a certain stage it more or less becomes integral to know musical theory and such for composition and to be able to progress.

I've always wanted to learn guitar, more acoustic than electric. I like the sound of it more than the bass.

I've played both and enjoyed both. Although I seemed to find bass abit more clumbsier. But its just me! :P And do you intend on learning how to shred too? I'm trying...

If you need any help along the way, feel free to PM me.

well, ive messed around with my dads bass, and i think the strings are easier to push down and get a good tone out of because they are bigger.... and with my dads bass i wouldnt be able to get blisters as easy as some of the other basses out ther.... its got nylon strings... so so so so much smotther, and not as rough... but idk.... i have a friend who can show me guitar but i may pay for bass lessons.... idk... ill decide in a couple weeks.... after i get back from band camp...

Go for bass.

And trust me, you will get blisters, provided you play properly (read: with fingers not a pick).
