As I'd hope you all know, a terrible cyclone hit Myanmar a little over a week ago. If not, just search it on Google News, you'll find a bunch on it.

What do you think of this militaristic regime of a government? The death toll is estimated to be near 100,000, with millions affected, yet the government, as a means to preserve their power over the country, hardly allow any aid from the UN in. And, as help and aid are impounded at the borders, more and more of the population will be devastated by starvation and disease. Countries are standing by, eager to give help, however they simply cannot do it.

What do you think of this government, that cares more for its power than its people in this day and age?

Governments always try to excuse their overbearing nature by saying that they're there to protect their people. In the case of Myanmar, it's sad to see that the government has done the exact opposite. They valued their stranglehold on that country more than the lives of human beings. Their actions have probably caused the deaths of thousands of deaths because of this. The people of Myanmar needed help as soon as it was offered by the international community.

To answer your question, it depends. The government always lives to serve itself before its people, but can indirectly benefits its citizens as a result. The government might decide that it'd be more conducive to the economy to lower taxes to spur spending. Basically, we're only benefited by the government in indirect ways that happen to coincidentally be good for us.
