Post subject: | Smoking age limit increased to 18 in Britain |
Since the 1st October the age restriction to be allowed to buy tobacco products was increase by 2 years to 18 in the UK. Personally I see a lot more people trying to get away with illegally buying them. I work at a store and have to sell these things quite frequently and have to deal with the hassle I get after asking an obvious under-aged person for some ID, and because a lot of stores and/or employees aren't entirely bothered who they sell restricted items to, I don't think it will help in the slightest. I know I smoked underage even though I couldn't buy the items from a store, though I don't smoke anymore, I don't see why it would change if the age limit is increased, I don't see it working at all, and is just another way for the government to fool people into thinking a solution has been put into play. I'm not entirely sure what the age restrictions are in the other parts of the world, but do you guys think this is a good move or a bad one? |

At the end of the day if underage people want cigarettes they'll get them. Just like alcohol and any other contraband. It's not hard to get an older friend or family member to go and get them for you. |

In the u.s. the smoking age has been 18 for as long as I can remember, 16 is way too young, personally smoking should be illegal, I know that wouldn't work out well at all though.... |

Who cares. Anyone underage who smokes is one of two things: 1) A chav who, to be honest, would be doing the world a favor by shortening his/her life 2) Attention *****/trying to fit in with TEH COOLKIDS. Either way, let them go wild. I like they've banned smoking in public areas now so as long as it's not affecting me i don't care. |

People don't have to call a code number to sell them where I work. CreepyPirate wrote: Either way, let them go wild. I always got really annoyed when waiting for the train to college, and some guy near me started smoking. I really hate the smell, but I think it's really irresponsible of the government to have these things out for years and then ban them, dragging people into the addiction and then expecting them to just stop. |

That's stupid. Here it is only 16, is it the same in England? 16 or 17 should be good, not 18. 18 is too much. |

I hate it when people smoke around me. I just ask them to stop or go somewhere else. |

It's always been 18 in Finland. It's just good, because underage are too stupid to think about their health. But then again, if underage smokes, there's always ways for him to continue smoking. No way stopping it. |

It's always been 18 in Canada and you can't smoke in public buildings, not even pubs and bars although you can smoke in smoking sections of hotels and in appartements. I belive it's even illegal to smoke on elementary school grounds. It's good that britain is starting to crack down 16 is way too young. |
