I can help!

Can someone explain to me how Chinese works.. all the words look really short and some of them look the same. Is it because they're pronounced in different tones that more complex words can be made?

there are accent marks over pinyin, and a lot of words are pronounced the same. You just have to figure it out from context. Its almost impossible to learn chinese without immersion

Basically yeah... And Chinese grammar is so different from English grammar. No wonder I had a hard time picking up English.
