Post subject:  Pearl Harbor Dishonor

Alright, as we all know, today is Pearl Harbor day (12/07/06). If you don't already know too, I am in in NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp). I'm a squad leader in the 4th platoon, 4th squad. Today was a normal uniform day, I had gotten my squad ahead of everyone else in the platoon today. While they were working on "Column right" (A marching command), I had my squad on "Column left". They did very well and I was very pleased with them. I was also happy with myself that I had gotten them over the level they needed to be. The Platoon Commander fell us into a platoon again and we fel out and made our way back to the classroom.

My Platoon Commander asked me to choose three people to help do flags (This is when we take down the American Flag, the State flag, and the School flag at the end of the day). I chose three people and we went outside.

I fell them in, forward march, right turn, right turn, present arms, ready cover, right face, and fall out. We proceded with pulling down the flags. We successfully got down all the flags except the American Flag, which always comes down last. I started with unlocking the lock on the American Flag and the next Cadet in seniority called Present Arms. The lock was frozen though. They were trying to tell me how to un-lock the lock since they thought I didn't know how to do it.

All three of the Cadets were trying to give me instructions at once and a security gaurd walked over. She said: "In 18 years of service I have never seen such disrespect while taking down the flag. How you like it if I reported your whooping and hollering to Master Gunny and Commander Laws?" (The teachers. also veterans) We said we we're sorry and proceeded back to the classroom. When we got there...oh man. The security guard reported us and said we were doing our "Whooping and hollering." Now all they were trying to do was help.

Still orders are orders and we probably shouldn't have been talking in the first place. I'm going to apologize to the Commander and the Master Gunnery Seargent tomorrow.

I think i'm getting DRB (Disciplinary Review Board) and i'm being kicked out of the Company. All this was alot of bad timing. We were in full dress uniforms and it was the day of Pear Harbor. The only thing that could have been worse is if I dropped the flag. I think I did the second worse thing.

If you don't understand thing and think I shouldn't be the one in trouble, I am the one at fault. When you are put in charge of something, it's your responsiblity to keep the peace between the Cadets. I'm ready to take full punishment for my actions.

Oh, and if any of you have grandparents who were veterans of that or died in the attack this is my full apology. As I said, i'm going to take full responsibility.

Well i wouldnt blame you, id blame your company, they really shouldnt have talked, and not to make you feal bad but did you plan your actions before the cermony? If you must explain yourself make sure you tell it honest, it does look good for a leader to take responsibility for his troops. But i forgive you and im sure most veterns would to, she sounds really uptight.

I think people are stupid and make a big deal out of a stupid thing like a flag.

Seriously, i'd tell whom ever got offended to shuve their flag, it's not important and their idiots for making such a big deal out of it.

Perhaps if you'd got out a lighter and burnt it, yeah, maybe..even then..it's just a stupid flag.

Flag burning is not against the law in the United States.

It is illegal under one cercumstance. If the flag is dropped it's meant to be burnt. It's an honor thing. Now if I had dropped the flag...THAT would have been bad.

Flag burning isn't just legal under one circumstance. It's legal. A person in America could walk outside of their house and burn the American flag.

On June 27, 2006, the most recent attempt to pass a ban on flag burning was rejected by the Senate in a close vote of 66 in favor, 34 opposed, one vote short of the two-thirds majority needed to send the amendment to be voted on by the states. Hmm, i've always been taught that it's illegal. Oh well, i'm not in any hurry to burn an American Flag anyway.

Well creepy, in our country we don't burn flags because we get kicked out of the army. I don't know about yours but we only do it if it is cut in half (no longer making a flag) and then we burn each half.

And what if we did burn your country's flag? I don't think you'd like it to much.

Anyway i don't see it as your fault. Just because the flock was frozen shut doesn't mean you need to be kicked from the army. I wouldn't apologize though. No reason to in my eyes. You made an error, were not perfect, [sarcasm]look at Bush[/sarcasm]!

You don't only burn the flag if it's broken in half, I've seen plenty of people burn your flag simply because their not happy with your country, it's in protest. Our flag gets burnt to i honestly don't care lol

The people represent a country, not a flag. A flag is meaningless without the people.

I agree pretty much with creepy to a certain extent.. For a few years i was in the Army JROTC. As a 2nd Lieutenant I had a lot of responsibilities. Leading my platoon and squads, plus many other responsibilities, including the flag now and then.

Personally i dont care for any flag in any country including my own. One thing in the army, navy etc, in any leadership position, it does not matter whos fault it is usually, in the end it usually always falls on the leaders shoulders. If my platoon acted up one day, then that would be my responsibility. I would have some higher ranking officer give me some stupid lecture, then of course that would **** me off, then i would give my platoon some disciplinary action.. Because they made me look like a bad leader.

I understand snowfox where your coming from, but however, americans just take this flag thing "WAY!" to seriously. Its like these idiots who see maybe a image on a tree that looks like jesus or something, then they go all pyscho and crazy and start praying at it, bunch of retards if you ask me. Its the same thing with the american flag, some of these so called patriotic american citizens praise the flag as if it was the holy grail, and basically some would literally kill themselves to protect some flag.. Its all stupid when considering america is one very VERY corrupt country itself. I have personally lived here for almost 7 years now, and I have seen more corruption in this hell hole than most other countries..

I agree. It is just like a logo, except for a country instead of a company.

Tell them to shove the flag up there ***... Eat it, burn it. Why give a ****? It is just a freaking flag.

Actually, I think a flag is a representation of how much you care about your country.

I really do not like the flag of the UK. I don't like the feeling that our country is respected as it should be. I'd be much happier with the St. George's cross flag being shown anywhere, like at the world cup or whatever.

You don't see a UK football team, it's England, Scotland and Wales, like it should be.
