RuneScape.com wrote: Hi everyone, We talked at the beginning of the year about how we wanted to make 2013 fun, memorable and special to all of you. We’ve still got a lot to do, but are starting to make good progress, especially in the war on botting and gold farming. From listening to your feedback we've made changes to address an issue that many of you brought up as a point of concern: player-run games of chance. Also known as flower games, hot/cold games or dicing, these games of chance had grown to become a major problem for the community and for us as the administrators of the RuneScape. In these games of chance, “hosts” offer other players a deal - usually by publicly spamming - and take a bet on the outcome of a randomised event. Such activities create many problems: they encourage spam advertising; the trust-based trades are rife with scamming; they're disruptive to the game's economy; they create feelings of unfairness; and have links with real-world trading and gold farming. From the recent forum discussion thread on this topic started by Mod Mark, it's clear that the overwhelming majority of you do not want this activity to remain in RuneScape. As such, we are making the following changes: Firstly, with immediate effect, we’re making an addition to the rules of RuneScape: You must not advertise, organise, promote or participate in player-run games of chance, where game money or items are staked on the outcome of a random activity. Any account found to be involved in such games of chance will receive a strike against their account. As with other offences, this will escalate from muting to temp-banning, and then to a last-resort action of permanent ban. While the hosts and advertisers of such activities are the obvious part of the problem, the players taking part are also at the root of the issue. If we’re to stamp out this type of disruptive behavior, everyone involved needs to be held accountable. The full details of this new rule can be found in the Rules of RuneScape. As with all rules, this applies to both the main and old school services. Secondly, in today’s game update we’ve made changes to certain in-game items which are regularly used in games of chance: mithril seeds, the Easter Ring/Ring of Egg, the Seal of Approval emote and the Classic Cape emote. To prevent their use in games of chance and to reinforce fair play, we have removed all randomised outcomes and actions from these items: Planted mithril seeds now always grow the same coloured flower, although picking the flower will still result in a randomly coloured flower in your inventory. Using the Ring of Egg will now always turn your character into a blue egg. The Seal of Approval emote now chooses the same seal every time it’s used. Clicking on the Skill Cape emote button when wearing the Classic Cape will always display a rune hatchet image. As with our war against botting, this is an ongoing effort and not a one-off resolution. We will continue to monitor the situation and make updates as appropriate in an effort to provide the fairest and most balanced resolution to this issue. Thank you for your comments on this topic so far. Please continue to give us your feedback so we can ensure we’re tackling the problem in the long term. Let us know on the forums. Thanks for reading, Mod Pips Executive Producer Full details are available on our FAQ here. Discuss this here. In Other News This week’s update has also made Momentum a persistent, toggled ability, much like Incite or Single-Way Wilderness. No adrenaline is generated while it is active, and it is still cancelled by use of any other ability. From today, Diango will be able to replace items with combat stats which have been obtained from the Squeal of Fortune. This carries of a fee of gold coins relative to the highest wield requirement for the item that you can access. Please note that following items cannot be retrieved from Diango if they have been destroyed prior to today's update: shark fists, TzHaar whip, Cupid bow, rosethorn wand, broken heart. The bonecrusher now crushes all bones dropped by a vanquished enemy, rather than just their guaranteed drop. All references to player-run games of chance have been removed from the Quick Chat options. Superior player-owned ports armour can now be repaired at any stage of degradation. Solomon's Store now stocks a range of cosmetic items that you may have missed out on before. See here for further information. A selection of minor bug fixes have been made across the game. Please see the patch notes for details. You may read the original news post here: http://services.runescape.com/m=news/dealing-with-games-of-chance |

Not exactly sure why it took them this long to finally put their foot down. Seems long overdue, but better late than never I suppose. |

Exactly, Davo. They should have known that any item with random animations was going to be used for player gambling since they changed the toy horses to just say "Say neigh to gambling!" over a year ago (Which I HATE, why not let it say just one cutesy phrase every time?). Why would they change those and not change mithril seeds, which were also being used at the time as well? I never understood it, and I'll never understand what took Jagex so long. This seems like such an easy fix, but they dragged it out for years, talked about for months, and previewed it in behind the scenes - why?! |

I honestly don't care that it was overdue, all that matters is that it finally happened, and thank god it did. |

I can rest easy now knowing (again) that Jagex is willing to do the right thing. I wonder as well what took so long. Although I still ask if the topic they had was really necessary. |

Perhaps this puts an end to virtually all gambling in Runescape, but I'm sure people will find some way to do it inside or outside the game. Like everyone else, I wonder why it took Jagex so long to put an end to this issue. It's only been going on for years. My best guess is that Jagex never really cared to begin with. Yes, gambling isn't the best thing to have in the game, but I wouldn't say it affected Jagex one way or the other. We'll probably never know what was going through their heads as to how long they took to act and in what ways, but at least it's taken care of...for now. |

Well, it's not hypocrisy since Jagex owns the game and can do whatever the hell they want. At least, that's the logic they use. |

Right, Duke. As I said in Killjoy's topic on this same issue, it's their game and they make the rules and say who can profit from it. |

Oh..err...interesting discussions. As for the gambling, very glad they did something about it. However, ruining the Mithril seed flowers was not a good thing(nor was ruining the toy horseys awhile ago). People can still plant the flower and then trade with the gambler and show them. Until they make flowers non-tradable of course. Just adding the rule would be enough IF Jagex actually acted on the reports. Considering the gamblers always do it in high population areas there would always be some wannabe mods or normal players who are annoyed at the spam and gambling that they would get reported. Jagex just has to ban the players that are reported. Considering all games are ultimately based on chance, people can 'gamble' with any aspect of Runescape. When will this tree be chopped down? When will the fire go out? Will my magic spell hit? Will I 1-hit the man? I'm sure there are more easier chance things that gamblers can use. The thing is, flowers and toy horseys existed for years before gambling entered RS. The problem isn't the items, it's the people. When Jagex added the dice the people were like, "Dice..Hey! Let's gamble with them!". The Dice themselves were well intentioned, but because they're related to gambling it caused gambling to enter RS. As for the hypocrisy thing... Jagex has proven every year that they are hypocrites. The only thing you can trust is that when they say they won't do something you can rest safely knowing they WILL do exactly that in the future. SoF is gambling but almost moreso RWT. You can(and many people obviously do) buy spins with real money. In game advantage being chance to gamble for a good item. Anyone could spend $5 and spin the 200m. Boom, just bought 200m for $5. If you were not able to buy spins with Real money it probably wouldn't be such a problem(though the sheer annoyance of it is...annoying). Solomon's store...those are all silly cosmetics I believe. Not really game changing, doesn't really give an advantage. The problem is the only cosmetics you can wear must be bought from there. Why can't I wear a shade robe or mystic over my ahrims? They should really allow any item as a cosmetic. That's how most games do it. Microtransactions...they are the way of the future. They're more efficient for many players than a subscription. They let players buy the content they want to play and ignore the content that they don't. Unfortunately, when Jagex goes 100% microtransaction they won't give us decade long loyals anything(meaning you'd have to pay to use your chaotic items). Well, there's my 2 coins. |

I'm glad they're finally taking a big step in preventing gambling but it's sad to see the easter ring only showing one egg. Too bad jagex had to do this because players have pushed gambling so far (although in retrospect it's a small sacrifice considering how effective it is and it pretty much ends gambling). I think they should have introduced the rule first as a warning, then made these changes. I liked my different easter eggs. =[ Oh well. Also, if the mithril seed flowers are always white, then how do you know when to pick them (if your searching strictly for black/white flowers)? Did they add in something that tells you which ones they are? |

I too am so glad Jagex has done the right thing. It is too bad however that it did effect many items in the game. Leave it to unscrupulous people to ruin the game for the rest of us. If you want to gamble online, there are many sites you can go to if you want to. RuneScape isn't one of them. Great move Jagex! |
