Not sure how to word this or where to start...
But when I log in and I have nobody else online this is what I see.
(and believe me.. the farther down, it doesn't get any better)

I will start off where I hate when Jagex decided to reset the names of inactive accounts.
I miss seeing the names of all my former friends who haven't been online in 7+ years.
I would see their names and that alone would spark my memory and brings me back to the times we spent on Runescape together.
Can't do that now.
Me and player [#CFSWJ49HHD] don't go way back...

Miss seeing the username of my friend who has passed away and that sucks alone.

I am a person who I guess is a hoarder. I like the remember the good times and hold onto it.
That's why I have never removed anybody off of my friendslist. (there has be several exceptions over the decade)
Even people like I said, who haven't been online in 8 years. A few even 9.
I know they won't be back but I can't let go.

Even after Jagex removed their usernames. I still have a hard time deleting them.
I can't tell the difference if it's just their username that has been recycled or if their whole account is delete.
My old school friend recently had his first ever account re-activated.
A account he hadn't had access to in 8 years. That account was still around in Jagex's system.
Was a barely used noob account so there was no logical reason that they would still store that information.
So that makes me believe that unless your account get's deleted for rule breaking.
Then it's never gone.

With that being said...
What if I remove these invalid names today and one of them comes online for the first time in 8 years tomorrow?
That's what I hold on to.
I shouldn't. Nobody is coming back.

That's tough, I didn't know they did that. I don't have many of these kind of names on my friends list (for now, apparently) but I have a few friends who haven't been online in 5-7 years for sure.

Those feels when you recover your first ever rs account, "Last login 10+ years ago", your name is gone. The only words fitting for such a moment are those of Horatio: "Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest! - Why does the drum come hither?"

My entire friendlist was deleted names as well. I am Ozymandias, king of kings.

I agree, it's dumb Jagex did this. Honestly, they should have let people keep their names no matter how long. Instead, if people want to give up their name, there should be an option to do so. But don't force it on the players. I get the intent, but why do it?

I came back after 4/5 years. They could come back too. All they need is to turn 30, have a mid-life crisis and have an inner battle with themselves over feeling old. "NO. I'M NOT OLD. I PLAY GAMES. LOOK. RUNESCAPINGGG."

I actually logged in to find a similar situation. I messaged one of my friends who I had played with way back in the day and told him his username was available to use. I threatened to take it unless he gave it a go and BOOM there he is; mining coal like a nub. Got him hooked again :D

A bit of an update.
I decided to first, remove all the deleted/default names.
Then the players remaining.
I went to each of their channels 1 at a time, to see who still had me added to their friend's list after all these years.
If they didn't. I deleted them, if they did, you are saved automatically. Doesn't matter when you last logged or how many years since we've even said hello to each other.

It was emotionally hard, but afterall.

I am down to 37 friends now.
