What does everyone think about the idea of Runescape creating an additional level indicator for players. We have a combat level, so why not have a skill level? I don't know if it's ever been discussed here, but I do know the idea has been tossed around a bit in the runescape forums.

It seems to be a decent idea, come up with some type of formula that ends up representing your total skill level. It would take into account all skills that currently are not used to calculate your combat level.

You would have to assign values to each skill, with certain skills that are tougher to train having more value assigned to them. For instance, if you had runecrafting and fletching at the same level, runecrafting would raise your total skill level more because it's a tougher skill.

Just my two cents on the idea. Would be a way for those who prefer to skill a way to show off their level.

I like the idea of total level being displayed instead of combat, however I don't like the idea of "tougher" skills being valued over less tough skills.

Eh, it's an ok idea, but if you really want to see skill levels, you could just check the hiscores. And in all truth, a 99 is a 99, whether or not it's easy. You gotta put in a lot of time and effort to get a 99. Anyway, I think the combat level is fine and is more important to most people over skill levels.

I think that is a brilliant idea. For those of us who like skilling more than combat, we would appreciate a level indicator. Love it!

It's a good idea, and if Jagex wanted to go an extra step, they could put in an option to choose which level you wanted to see (such as total, combat, or just a single skill).

Well your combat level isn't a reflection of if you trained tougher combat skills or not... like the worth of each combat skill to your combat level isn't based on how "tough" (basically: how long it takes to get xp) the skill is so I don't see why, if there was a skilling level, it should be based on how tough the skills you trained were. Combat level was a reflection of how "strong" you are I guess so I don't see why skilling level would be a reflection of how tough the skills you trained were... more how "strong" you are at doing skilly stuff... Like just because 99 cooking doesn't take that long doesn't mean something you can only do at 99 cooking is far less superior than something you can do only at 99 runecrafting.

Personally I don't think any level should be displayed unless you are in a PvP area then combat level or if you are in a skilling area then skill total or level of relevant skill or combined levels of relevant skills.

It would be interesting to have a non-combat skill level indicator. I agree with MageGuy, you should be able to toggle between the two or be able to have both shown at all times. It would be interesting to see what that would do to general respect between people, as just about anyone with low combat levels are usually called noobs.

I don't think you need to have a level really. It'd just complicate things for new users. Having your total level on show much like your combat level would be an interesting idea though and one i believe they've considered in the past.

Agreed! My cb is bad, but skilling is good. it would be nice to judge people on their skilling level as well as their combat level.

I'm very fine with the current system, but maybe in certain places shows more than just combat. I.e dung lobby.

I would not like that. though I'm not really into combat, I train my skills mostly. I would not want my total level to be shown to everyone. And there the option of which one you chose to display. Well.. I really don't care what everyone's total level is. Should just stay as combat. forget the level 3 skillers and such. Combat level represents how tough you are. for pvp and pvm team work.
I don't like change. It's been this way forever. If Jagex were to change this. Might as well have no level displayed. period. ( another idea I don't like )

I could agree with that. An option would be much better. That's what I would like to see. Perhaps it could display both. Or maybe it isn't the person's option. I mean, maybe it could be a setting set by a person as to what levels they see about you, not what levels the person wants you to see if that makes sense. Pick what you want to see about a person rather than how they want to be seen (unless they actually care ).

I like the idea a lot but I don't like how long the info would be.

Seem's like an interesting Idea. I personally am a combat guru but being recognized for skills instead would be nice at times.

I like where you are going with this since I have had similar thoughts.

Spoiler for My thoughts:

A blog post of mine wrote:
...

I started to develop a formula that would recalculate a total level and have it reflect upon the difficulty of the skills rather than just straight numbers. In other words, a maxed out cooking level would be somewhat even with a mid level construction or runecrafting.

I did some research and found the amount of people that have 99′s in each skill. (Yes I could be more accurate with times and cost, but this is just a rough idea and I think this way pretty much captures the main idea.)

Basically what you do is take each of your skills and multiply your level by the “difficulty rank”. We’ll call that total for each skill your “skill value”. Once you find all of your skill values, you add them all up and divide by 24.

The scale is as follows: (All 1′s and 10 HP) = 14.375 (All 99′s) = 1237.5

Not a very uniform scale, but like I said its just a rough idea.

The difficulty ranks are based on the number of people who have 99. (24-Least People – 1-Most People)

Summoning – 24
Construction – 23
RuneCraft – 22
Herblore – 21
Mining – 20
Agility – 19
Farming 18
Slayer – 17
Smithing – 16
Crafting – 15
Hunter – 14
Prayer – 13
Thieving – 12
Fishing – 11
Firemaking – 10
Magic – 9
Woodcutting – 8
Range – 7
Defense – 6
Hitpoints – 5
Attack – 4
Fletching – 3
Cooking – 2
Strength – 1

...

I don't think either of our ideas would work that well if implemented into the game though. However, I have thought about what everyone has said here and I'm making a 'prototype' of how this concept might look if implemented. I'll post as soon as I finish.
