Post subject:  The new mini-game

For the past year, Jagex have been doing their level best not to hype up the new skill. It failed, because if anything, it was more anticipated than Summoning was. And what a let down it is.

Jagex call it a skill, presumably because they haven't released one for a while. It simply isn't a skill, and to call it one is frankly laughable. More than anything else, it feels like a mini-game. It's just a area stuck on to the side of the current map with no integration with the rest of RuneScape even attempted. It is totally detached from the game- you wouldn't know it's RuneScape if it weren't for the user interface.

As a mini-game, it may be "big", but it fails to turn heads. Training Dungeoneering is painfully slow, so much much so that after over an hour, a mere level 4 is reached. And this wouldn't matter if it were fun, but it's not. It's some sort of cross between treasure trails and Stealing Creation, and it really doesn't work. Aside from reading through reams and reams of tutorials on the website, the skill is woefully under-explained and the vast amount of new items and NPCs only adds to the confusion. It's like a totally different game, and not in a good way.

So maybe the rewards save it? In keeping with the current mini-game setup, rewards come in the form of tokens which you then exchange for various items. Also like the current mini-games, it will take you many hours to earn yourself enough tokens for an even half-decent item. But the biggest mistake of all is that nearly all of the weapons and armour degrade as you use them. There is absolutely no excuse for this- what on Earth were Jagex thinking? Is it a deliberate attempt to really p*ss of everyone in RuneScape? Well Jagex, you've succeeded.

The rewards are the only tenuous link the the rest of RuneScape. Jagex said it would have strong connections to nearly every existing skill. Other skills maybe useful inside the Dungeoneering skill, but Dungeoneering is totally irrelevant outside of the tacked-on dungeon areas. Luckily this means that training it won't disadvantage you in any way when it comes to anything outside of the skill itself.

Dungeoneering is a massive disappointment and a woeful attempt at a skill whose concept would never work in RuneScape anyway. It is poorly thought out and the execution is even worse. It's an appalling excuse for a skill, and a as mini-game it's not much better. This is the worst update in a long time, and what makes it even more worrying is that Jagex seeming elation at what they thought was an excellent addition to the game. I've just sent a bug report to notify Jagex of a stray icon on the skills menu.

It's interesting that you say it's seperate from rs and like a different game. It's actually the scrapped mechscape they turned it into a skill.

i completely agree sad to say.

one thing u forgot to say is that it takes forever to even get tokens.. i was thinking over a 3-4 hour period id atleast get 100-500 points but instead i aquired 33 points. i had a good team and everything. we breezed through boss after boss and all i got was that? -.-

only thing im looking forward to is maybe some tweeks.. or an awesome quest in the following week

I like the game as a whole, but don't think it should be a skill, as it doesn't actually do much outside of the game arena. People are used to being able to train skills anywhere they want in Runescape (rightfully so).

As far as the XP rate goes, I think that once you get to higher levels the experience gets much faster..for example at level 5 I was getting maybe 10 points a game, and by 17 I was getting over 700 on average, with a 3 person team. You just have to watch out for penalties (mainly dying), as that can take a huge amount off your score. I can see by level 70 or so getting like ~25k/hr. I have found having well-rounded skills is very useful.

EDIT: As a bit of proof for this, the skill has only been out for about 15 hours, and people are already over 150k XP (level 50), meaning it is entirely possible to get 10k an hour.

Well I've no way of proving it i just know the CEO or someone at Jagex meantioned in an interview somewhere that while mechscape was scrapped they was going to put what they had/part of what they had into RS a a skill because it wa a good fit.

So I'm presuming it was this. Certainly seems like it and i can certainly see why mechscape was scrapped now.

once you understand how the "prestige" works, the minigame is actually worthwhile to do. my only qualm is that when you work with teammates they're sometimes idiots.

I'm enjoying it. Much more interesting than the Slayer mini-game.

I agree, I thought this skill was more anticipated then summoning because of the lack of info on it

summoning was a letdown on the first release, it wasn't until the "summoning 2" update that made it actually worth throwing money to train it. they didn't release any info beforehand so it wasn't another letdown i presume.

I agree with pretty much everything stated in this topic.
