Post subject:  permanent mute worse than a ban? solution!

hello all. so one of my best friends in game was recently permanently muted. lame no? currently, he can only talk to me or anyone else by getting on his pure account. lamer, no? in my oppinion , the permanent mute is not so much a punishment for harsh talkers, but a torture. i'd even go as far as to say its smitefull. it makes life hell for players when they have no communication whatsoever, and makes many emotionally depressed from playing and quit, like its meant to make them not have fun on the game anymore. **try communicating in real life with only the 20 rs gestures, and tell me its easy. if you think rs isn't real life... you're talking and interacting with real people with real emotions, making legitimate trades and decisions, etc. its real life, just in a different media, and with different goals.**

well, he came up with an idea, and although i feel he sorta just wants help himself, not others, i still agree with it.

dawg366's idea:

a player who is permanently muted should be allowed to talk under very specific conditions:
1: they may only talk in private and clan chat
2: the person or people they are talking to must have the muted person on their friends list.
3: in clan chat, their owner of the channel must have the muted person added in order for them to talk.
4: any further violations reported from speaking in these methods will result in an immediate and permanent ban. (i added this one. i think its fair.)

my explanations for why this is a good idea:

1: this upholds the major problem of public offenses such as spamming, swearing in large crowds, scamming, or almost all the rules for that matter.

2: if the person has the mute added, obviously they are at least willing to talk to them, if not desiring to do so, and if if an individual player is willing to tolerate talking to an offender, then the offender should be able to respond to them to maintain the friendship. also, a friend is more likely to be comfortable with that person, and be less likely to be offended by anything they should say.

3:in regards to clan chat, it is up to the owner of the channel who is allowed to speak in their channel, and as such, if a mute wishes to speak in a clan, the owner should judge whether they are worthy of speaking to the group or not. the person can easily be removed from the list and kicked to silence them again, and with a permanent mute, if they act up in a group, they have large risk of going one step further to permanent ban. so they are likely to behave, or be in an audience of their peers who accept them.

to quote some random from clan chat "whats the point of an mmorpg if you cant talk with your friends?"

for voting, support, don't support. please explain why you do or don't' support, thanks.

added ideas:
1: make this available only to members, because taking out communication makes it less worth the money to play, even if it is only 5$ to play... i'd rather spend 15$ a month for wow (I'm poor) then 5$ a month for a game i can't talk in.

2: make it a time based reward system. after say 10m exp gained (proving you are still interested in playing runescape), then you can talk to people a certain number of messages per day. like avery 10m exp without rule breaking gets 100 messages to friends per day

I completely agree. What is the point of an mmorpg if you can't even talk with your good friends :(

I understand that they broke the rules, and yada yada... but I don't see the harm in allowing the muted person to talk to people who clearly want talk with them.

Ok, so here's my side.

I see a Permanent Mute as a punishment. If you break the rules, you suffer. I don't believe it has anything to do with the player's friends. If they don't have a problem with someone's language, then they won't report that player, simple. But if the player is caught running his mouth to someone who doesn't like it, then I believe he should be punished.

Also, about the ClanChat comment. What if the owner of the channel doesn't have a problem with swearing, but the people in the chat do? Do they have to leave?

And yes, you're right, what is the point of playing if you can't talk? But jagex give us chances. I doubt they will ban someone for a first time offense of Rule #1 (I'm living proof of that). So if someone doesn't like your language, you are given another chance.

Sorry, but I completely disagree with basically everything you suggested.

Oh and by the way, it isn't real life.

You should be able to appeal just like a permanent ban.

you should be able to talk to your friends (not add any new ones) and talk in clan chats you've been in before

i think that most people who've been muted have deserved it, and although it really messes up the game for them it does make the environment better.

Half year old reports really should be ignored though... >.>

Yes, that is true.

That would still allow you to talk to everyone. Jagex doen't want you to run your mouth again, like before.

No lol

If he was muted then he was muted, all the mutes get looked into. Unlike bans you can't really accidentally get perminantly muted just because of the process of it all.

It's a punishment, they have to deal with it or start a new account. Personally if i got perminantly muted, I'd probably start a new account, transfer all the gear on the mute to the noob. :p

Lol wtf, drop trader. XD

You can actually get accedentally muted. I was. Remember that post a long time ago? Well anyways, I was Woodcutting, and this girl comes along, we were talking, then she gets on a higher leveled account and then starts saying bad things.

Then she says something that I did not know what was bad, which is very stupid. She passed the filter and said "faq" instead of, well, you know.

I repeated all that she said, including that, and it got me muted. She framed me.

So yes, you can be accedentally muted, Creepy. People can fool you like that multiple times and then you do it one more time and you get permanently muted.

I don't feel any sympathy for you...you shouldn't repeat what people say. In fact, if you feel yourself getting angry in RS you should probably log out and go eat some spaghetti or something. That always cools me down.

i dont have the full story, but from the small information discussing his ban, he had no warning that he needed to keep his mouth shut. apparently, sometime in the last month he logged into his appeal an offense/ban menu, and found a full list of offenses, most of which occurred more than 3 months ago. and i know they all appeared at once, because he had checked the week before because someone marked him for account sharing, aka drop trading to an alt (actually his alt was giving his main 3k iron arrows :s ), so he did deserve it, but he had no idea he had done anything wrong at all until it all came crashing into him.

as far as the clan chat issue goes, if members of the clanchat are not comfortable with the "muted person", they could easily mark them, and get them permanently banned, or just leave the chat, and thats under the circumstance that the player is being an idiot and not being cautious with his language like a person should. anyone on a last chance appeal knows not to do anything wrong, so a person on permanent mute last chance, would be especially aware of their actions an words. and in any case, the clan leader could just remove them to silence them.

The environment? The suggestion is for private chat and clan chat, which don't affect the environment of the game. Ok, clan chat would count as environment, but private messages certainly would not affect the environment. :P

Mute should apply definately to regular chat, and probably clan chat, but mutes should be allowed to talk to friends who had them added before the muting at least. :(

Permanent mute is like a life sentence in a solitude cell. It is too harsh to be an effective punishment for whatever offense.

I can understand temporary mute for up to 6 month or so. It gives enough time to understand the issue and change the behavior.

So I don't think the suggestions above are very good, I simply think that perm mute punishment should be removed from the game completely and replaced with a gradation of temporary mutes.

I think Permanent punishments are too harsh, especially the way Jagex enforces rules way too much.

"buy u memberz lolol" - Permanent ban for password scamming.
*Gives a friend 2 million gp* - Permanent ban for real life item trading.

The amount of time and effort put into an account such as Nmr7 for example should not just be thrown away, sure if someone breaks the rules they shouldn't make the ban permanent.

I agree with Vaskor and think punishments should last several months instead of forever.

I for one don't usually agree with permenant muting, it seems unfair to me. However, I do think it should stay at all or nothing. If you are permenantly muted, you shouldn't be able to talk at all in the game.

However, I would see being muted as a form of torture. You can still get on, see your stats, play the game, but not being able to communicate would be hell. I'd rather be banned and get it over with.
