I have been thinking this same thing for a while now. With the ever growing number of players hitting the all 99 level, and many more to soon hit it, there are a lot of people hopelessly addicted to thes game. Many of the 'top' players have literally no life outide of 9-10 hours of runescape a day. American Doctors Want Videogame 'Addiction' Recognised Is having no income and playing a computer game considered in any way healthy? Not at all. Aside from the physical damage that is well proven, like carpel tunnel, lower back pain, eye strain, and tendon damage, the mental aspects haven't really been given much attention yet. This is not just a problem with RS players. I am sure some people have heard of 'Evercrack' and some of the other names given to games that absorb people's lives. This field will only get more attention in the near future as MMOs gain more mainstream status. Chinese sweat shops aside, some people are actually making a real life living off playing games. Given that is a very small percent of players, but it can be done. Jusat some food for though. |

I loled. This is seriously laughable. It isn't the community being full of no lifers. It's the game being easier and easier. Pest control - More 126s Alching - More 99 mages Chinchompas - More 99 rangers Pyramid plunder - More 99 thieves Cook-x - More 99 chefs Fletch-x - More 99 fletchers There's much more than just that. Maybe if you researched a bit you'd know that it's obvious that the easier the game, the easier you max out. |

Even with the things you listed how many hours does it take to gain a 99 in any skill other than hunter? How many people have 200mil xp and how many hours does it take to get there? My point is that many people develop an addiction to MMOs. This is a very real condition with physical and mental symptoms. Denial is the first sign of a problem. |

Nah, when i first got perm permb banned and i mean, forever on september 7th 2006, it was very hard for me to not think about runescape any more. About when 2007 arrived, i had no problems with runescape any more. Besides, i say, "sttmb12r's lvl 108 locked account, and banned, dusty, and spiderwebs on it... who cares, just a game!" Because as soon as your banned, you cant do any thing about it. |

Getting a stat to 99 takes like 10 years... and Sttmb12 there's a new thing that started from this year that gives you a last chance, so you might be able to get it back. |

My point is that many people develop an addiction to MMOs. This is a very real condition with physical and mental symptoms. Denial is the first sign of a problem. And you are saying? Working hard to achieve something is bad? People actually put in work and effort to achieve their 99 goals, the game being easy is actually good about it because it doesn't force them to no-life for the goals. So if that's bad for you, then I wish you good luck finding a job in real life that doesn't force you into working hard. You may find one, but don't come complaining that the pay is low. Simply, you have to work hard to succeed in life, and so do you in achieving goals in the game itself. Another thing - Addiction. That's the gamer's responsibility, not the others. You're bringing this up like parents whose children are addicted to gaming. Bottom line: It's nobody's but the gamer's responsibility to take care of himself. I've seen many parents complaining to publishers about gaming addiction, WoW always comes to mind. You don't need a scientist to prove that you have to be responsible in your gaming to not be addicted. Since you actually bothered to do so, that's where the laughs come in. Don't even bother acting like a total know-it-all saying "denial is the first sign" and stuff. If you bother to check first, you'd at least know that I don't play this game anymore. All in all, you're treating addiction like a mental or physical problem. No, it's actually about responsibility, you're not gonna have low IQ if you're too addicted to games. |

Yeah your right, it is a problem. People are wasting their lives away, and more and more will in the future. I don't think it really matters though, we all die someday so why not waste our lives playing video games. |

the way I see it, is that if you have spare time and want to play a game in that spare time, it's perfectly fine. I know I'm addicted, but I'll never brush off my friends to fletch. l0l. Pubs > Runescape. Always. |

who cares if ppl are wasting there life away playing mmo's. it is a problem but if it is what makes them happy and they enjoy doing it then ppl should mock them for it. or talk crap for them wanting to have goals even if the goal is for a video game. |

I have been addicted to RuneScape. Literally, it was like a drug, I would get ratty, p*ssed off, and just plain annoyed if I couldn't go on it daily, and I would shout at my parents if they forced me off of it. I dunno why, but I loved playing it. I think that when we recieved internet problems, and had no internet, that I calmed down, and didn't get so into playing it. It may have also been because I was hacked, all my good stuff was stolen, didn't help that my password was like 5 letters long, but it helped me relise that there is a real life outside of the RuneScape. Anyways, addiction to video games, I feel, is a very bad thing, and I don't what can be done to stop it, but it is an actual serious threat, including medically. It needs to be helped, and stopped. ![]() |

I wish you good luck finding a job in real life that doesn't force you into working hard. Ok man, look at the other posts. You seem to have a problem with making the distinction between real life and games. Getting a 99 in a game means nothing in the context of real life. It is a waist of time grinding out hours and hours of the same thing day in day out. The only behavior that it resembles is that of a crack monkey. I liked your quote about a real life job. 95% of the population are in a job that doesn't require hard work. Making real money is hard, being poor and/or having an addiction is easy. Could it be Kill that you have Amusement Identify Disorder? Quote: This Syndrome, in which the individual has difficulty distinguishing between an online game and real life. The individual sees his or her online character as being as "real" as the individual's real-world self, if not more so. One manifestation of this disorder is the tendency to treat game accomplishments such as impressive magic items or guild leadership as the equivalent of real-life accomplishments like pursuing a successful career or raising a family. In addition to impairing the individual's personal growth in the real world, this disorder also makes them extremely boring at parties.
Real life goals are character building. Feeding a game addiction by calling some level a 'goal' is not a goal at all. It is a waist of time. If I waist 30 hours I can get 1.5mil combat XP. Nothing there about a goal. |
