Post subject:  the "regarding your runescape account" email

hey everyone, just bringing it to your attention, there's been a scam going around, i don't' know if its been around a long time or not, but its sprung up twice on me in 1 month. once in game, and once through an email i got today.

some (omigod i flipping wish i could swear here!!! so appropriate right now!!) is , ingame, using an auto typer to rapidly send 5 messages all within 2 seconds that talk about how jagex thinks you may have been acc sharing and if you dont' foollow the instructions in the next few pms you will be permanenetly banned, etc. DONT LISTEN TO IT. if you pay attention, you'll notice this guy has no crown next to his name, nor is his name an acutal name, like mod mark, or mod elise, or something. MARK HIM, and if you would like, INSULT HIM in a way that doesn't risk you getting marked.

the other one is an email that i got today, and i've copied it to give you the exact specifics of it. it looks rather confusing right now, but if you turn your html "on" on this site, you can see it, or, copy it into an email and send it to yourself, and you'll see it as well.

here it is as it comes when "ctrl+c" 'd

and for those of you who care, this was my response to his email...

i wont put it here because there is considerable profanity and vulgar language, but with a mods permission i will post a censored version.

if you are 18 or older, and really desperate to know exactly what i said, i will answer you via email, but it really inst' that important.

all the same... IF YOU GET THIS EMAIL, DO NOT COMPLY WITH IT, and ESPECIALLY DO NO TFOLLOW THE LINK POSTED!!! EVEN IF YOU DON'T GIVE ANY INFORMATION, THE SITE WILL INSTALL A KEYLOGGER ON YOUR COMPUTER TO STEAL YOUR PASSWORD!!!! curse him, report him to whatever place you can, specifically an email service provider. remember jagex will never contact you in game about an offense, nor will they try to reach you through an email. they will only contact you through the official jagex mailbox that you have assigned to the account in question. even if it does say it is from runescape.com, there are email systems that let you customize your email name. also, remember the only way jagex can have your email adress is if you are a member, yet this email goes out to membs and non membs alike. he gets it from forums on fan sites, like this one. if you are afraid to respond in an offensive way as i did, that is perfectly fine. but keep in mind that the writer of the email is scum, no-matter how you look at it.

thank you for your time, i hop ei helped some of my friends here at rsbandb stay safe with this info.

Most people know not to send information regarding your Runescape account through email, but thank you for posting this anyway.

As much as I hate to say it, that was a very well put together scam. To a normal new player that would look very legit. The two things that set it apart are Jagex will never email you personally, and Jagex uses better grammar than the person who sent the email.

Anyway, I would hate to see anyone here fall for that scam. Sad thing is we can't do much about it because they don't provide their RSN.

Best suggestion would to be to add that email address to you blocked user list.

stupid people that ruin the game, i cant believe that they go to the trouble to get the software that sends the e-mails and everything. kind of sad :(

i must say, it was very well laid out though, but still, hope he (or she) gets a kick in the head...or ten...

Things like that have been going around forever.

I agree with Agent Waffles. If you read the pages you're supposed to read you would know not to fall for that scam, with all the warnings.

Jagex only sends messages to your inbox on the website...I've heard that at least a million times so anything that isn't sent there isn't true.

That's just sad. Who's to say the person actually knows that he's hacking into good accounts? Get something like that and do with with a bunch of newbie characters just to annoy him if you DO somehow accidentally fall for it, then seek and destroy said keylogger.

It's only logical. They made and are funding that players' inbox message center, so there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON for them to really care what your e-mail address is, let alone e-mail you there when they've got the message center.
