Post subject:  the REAL meaning of runescape

I got really bored and started reading some general chat forums... and realized something... Instead of saying what people are doing wrong, I'd rather write what people should be doing.

So you start runescape, you mine for 10 minutes, get a full inventory of tin and coal, then smelt it into a bronze bar, and make a dagger, maybe get a smithing level. It's the greatest thing ever. It's fun. But then you go back, and someone calls you a noob. You look at your levels, and realize, you're not good, then you try to become good. You sit there, mine for an hour, bank the ore. Then you finally start smelting it. You only get to level 15 smithing, and can barely make any bronze, but you like it, you accompished something. Now to sell your items you made... Wait, no one will buy them. You sell them to a general store for about 30 gp.

But now, once again, a higher level harasses you. You feel like you HAVE to be good.

Eventually you're a level 60, with mediocre skills. You know the prices of most items, and you know everything about it. After all that hard work. But you're still in addy, and someone once again calls you a "noob" you fight back this time, they eventually claim THEY won.

Now you are fueled with rage. You're not playing for fun anymore, you're playing to be good. You set a goal, to be the best woodcutter... You want to buy a rune hatchet, but only have 15k cash on you... So what do you do? Try to rip someone off, when you know it's 20k. This axe will be yours, you know it. So you try to buy it for 15k. After no luck, some of you try to earn the cash, but another group of you try to steal it... To scam another member.

Scamming someone works, put up your addy plate, plus 5k, then remove the plate at the last second. Then you woodcut get leveled up a bit. Then you notice someone, 5 levels lower than you with full rune, a mask, or even a phat.

Now, runescape has became a chore. You're no longer a level three doing whatever they can, when you were a level three, you ENJOYED the game, because you had it all. You level up mining, and then started fishing. You did whatever you wanted, as long as it was fun.

Now you would plan what to do. If you got bored, youd continue. You're now level 70. A great warrior, possibly a member. At times you'd train combat for 5 hours on end. Not to have fun, but to level up a skill. Afterall, the grass is much greener. Some of you go runecraft, make natures. Play for hours to gain money to buy a cool looking sheild.

But you forgot one thing, once you have the sheild, what will you do with it? You sell the sheild eventually, for a price lower than what you paid for it. And now what's next... You get the first taste of dragon armor. OMG it's dragon, I need it. It's red, it looks unique, and a higher level has it! Eventually you quit training non melee skills, it's boring. So to spice it up, you start quests. Once again you begin to have fun. There's a point to the game. But once you complete all of them, its boring.

You're probably level 80ish now, you might have a dragon med. Most likely, you see someone who is better than you. And they're richer, their skills are better, and they're a few levels below you. Now you start the serious game. You level up your skills, take a week to theive. The next week you runecraft. The week after that you melee. And then you range, then you woodcut. You have alot of money, and then you see someone weaker than you.

You insult them, you laugh at them. You found something you enjoy. To bully the lower levels. If you can get a good deal, you take it. Someone who is new to the game is selling a half key, only 10k. You buy it and sell it for 50k.

The game hasn't become an online COMMUNITY, it has become a game where you make money off of other people. It's their problem, right? Even if you're the one who is stealing from them. They're stupid right? They're lower than you. Thus you're godly.

You shop for the best deals. A cannon for 600k, wait, you can get it for 575k! Although it'll take you a few hours, you're too ignorant to realize that 25k can be made in only a few minutes. So you once again steal from another person. Steal what they made. Steal what they accomplished.

But now you mature a bit. You're level 95, you're raking in the cash. So you might lend a hand to someone. You've beaten the game, you don't need much more. A party hat would be nice, but heck, it wont help much... But then you realize, if I had phats, I'd be richer! I could show it to my friends.

But, you dont play for fun anymore, you may be a better person, and help people, but now you try to level. You aim for a phat. But you realize, you cant make money off stuff you formerly did. You need to hit the big game.

So you level up one skill, really high. And you get the money coming in. You're level 100+ . You crave rares, maybe even a dchain. And you continue playing, not for fun but for money. Eventually you get older, and realize how stupid a game is, you had fun in the past, but it's time to move on to another game. You might give some stuff away to friends, but overall you quit.

But theres one thing left... The people who eventually come back after they quit realize something. They can still have fun, except this time, dont play for money. If you feel like fishing, go fish. Who cares?

One thing they need to learn to come back is that the game was once fun, when they were a low level. So now you only play occasionally, but it's fun. Eventually, you fade out. Finally you quit. You might get a good job, or even go to college.

Some will stay in the runescape scene, some may not... But one thing for sure, you've met new people, learned new things... And you enjoyed it at one time...

And I hope you all enjoyed what I wrote. Also, don't post if you're going to say something negative please?

This is not directed toward you, even though it says you about 100 times. This is a scenario. Congradulations if you read it, and I hope you got something out of it.

Wow, I read through that. A lot of it is true, but your scenario also deals with people who, for some reason, don't MIND cheating people. Sometimes it becomes tempting but not everyone resorts to it. Your example deals with an extreme case of people who begin to take the game way too seriously. Thanks for writing it.

I've always played for fun. That bit about if you feel like fishing, go fish? Yep thats me all over. I get bored of one skill after about 20 mins and go onto something else, I don't think pures are good because they really are for one purpose only.
Nice essay, I would never have had the patience...

that is so true what you wrote
i remember the summer of 2005, i wanted full zammy
i went woodcutting.
i woodcutted for 10h straight each day
then i got enough money for full zammy
i bought it but it didn't make me more happy
while i was buying it i was planning the next training phase
and then, 4 months later
i barely worn my full zammy
i sold it for the same price as i bought it
it has become the same in real life
i take the things i get for granted

I agree, I began to get addicted, it was drawing me in. I wasn't playing for fun, I was playing to win, to be the best. One of my friends stopeed a while ago, instatly I said "It's because although you've been playing ovr double the amt of time I have, I'm better than you" At the time I felt good, I felt great! I must be amazing, but if you added up playing time, he was probably about the same as me, or less.
Finally, it was my mum (yeah, I'm English) who snapped me back to reality, I was playing for 5, maybe up to 7/8 hours A DAY, and only on the weekend. I made about 20 posts a day on forums, I think my highest ever was 100 post in one day, on seperate forums. Anyway, I did something and my mum wouldn't let me use the PC (or just RS, can't remember now) for a month, at the end of that, I really wanted to play, I started, but couldn't get into it. I was playing more sport, doing more creative things, instead of wasting away on a game. Anyway, I then didn't play much for about a month, never enjoying it like I'd used to, but wanting to get back into it, to be great again. Then I just cancelled my membership, realising it was a waste of my money, For the last few weeks of my membership, I asked my frend to take away all of my members things, to do with them what he would, those months of work I just gave away for 250k.
He still plays, but he enjoys it, I think, I havn't been on properly for about 6 months now, but go on for 5mins before getting, bored. I realise now that I was wasting my time, and now concentrate on different things.
Although I never cheated. I feel like it was a waste of time.
Before you start gaming again think of these two things:
1. The games in China (OR Japan) that DIED after gaming marathons, could that happen to you?
2. What will you do with everything you have worked to acheive on S after you quit? Was it just a collossal waste of time?

This is my view
Thanks for reading

Nice reading! I can relate to a lot of it. Even the trying-to-get-things-5k-below-market-price. I have now however realized it's not really profitable, not fun, so I don't anymore. I pay the 150 each for bow strings  . I've never made fun of people for their not-so-good items tho, but I've seen many who does.

Was there any point in wasting more of your time by writing this reply? No.

I guess the moral of this story is to not get carried away with being better at a game if it sacrifices your ability to have fun with it.

That was a nice story and all..for some people it might be true..but no matter what I do in RS I find it fun, and I have been playing for a little less than 2 years now..and I have never scammed anyone, gotten banned, or hacked or anything..

Your post count has nothing to do with this thread ontop of the fact that he didn't wish for people to post negative comments to what he wrote. Stop spamming, please.

I agree with Bib. I rarely play nowadays because I got so involved with just wanting to make myself better at some skills but now I do less repetitive things (like WC or mining) and just go hang out with people I know. It's a lot more fun when you meet people who are interesting to talk to..
