Some clues I've been using as I've been playing:
> If the quality is very, very grainy, it's in the US midwest
> Metric vs. Imperial = Place in the world
> Know the signs in your backyard
> Memorize the colours of various traffic plates in the EU, the numbers itself are censored, but the border + background colour give great hints
> Know this list inside-out:
http://www.google.com/help/maps/streetv ... -resorts-and-slopes/> Know Quebec vs. English Canada
> Know Maritimes vs. Rest of Canada
> Know rough elevation of various parts of North America
> Know which countries drive on the left
> Know the pattern of Interstate numbers in the US (multiples of 5s, multiples of 10s, what even numbers mean, what odd numbers mean, and what odd/even prefixes mean for interstate ring roads and spurs)
Using all of that, I got 15k without googling (which you guys seem to not do at all, is it frowned upon?). With googling, I got
http://geoguessr.com/?v=eyJ0b3RhbFBvaW5 ... bmdlU2NvcmUiOm51bGx9One time I was at a resort island owned by Spain. There were Spanish flags and EU flags flown everywhere, even the signs were in Spanish. I didn't know exactly where I was, so I googled some landmarks, and I was on some island off the coast of Morocco, which I thought wasn't right at all. After giving up my location, I placed my guess somewhere along the coast of Spain, turns out the ISLAND OFF MOROCCO WAS CORRECT!
