I recently moved into university and the people next door to me really like their rap music. Thankfully, being the audiophile I am, my speakers are better than theirs 8)
Now before I begin, I feel that I should clarify what I mean when I rant about rap music. There IS good rap music. The kind I am referring to is not the good rap music, but such masterpieces that consist entirely of the lyrics (spoiler because offensiveness)

"***** don't worry 'bout nothin"
repeated over and over again.
I cannot even comprehend why someone would EVER listen to a song like that. The beat, for that one at least, isn't even catchy or exciting in any way.
Does anyone have any idea why on earth people listen to music like that?

EDIT: This is... this is really something people listen to?

Being a high school senior, I experience similar problems. It also doesn't help that I was raised to be a Midwest hayseed, but I've never been excessively fond of the rap genre. I like hip hop, pop rock, and even a little house, but I can't stand listening to a nasal voice repeating "You a stupid hoe" over and over again. Not only do I not appreciate the repetition, but some of the songs are just downright explicit. Anyone that has to swear that much to sell a record needs to rethink their life path. Most of the people I see listening to this stuff are either already high, or they're seriously considering doing so. I guess I'll just pull a Shane and say that most of it falls on the decline of morality in the modern world :P

Well being a hobbyist recording engineer (if you can even call me that) I feel your pain. As you have stated, there IS some good hip-hop music.

However, there is the opposite end of the spectrum fronted my frat boys and trashy wannabes with the mindset of "HOW LOUD CAN I GET DAT BASS." That creates the archetype of meaningless "lyrics" and poorly produced tracks with the same clapping samples and horrible drum rhythms. I laugh to myself when all these kids talk about putting X" subs in their car. Then I hear them and it sounds like an elephant giving birth in a sewage treatment plant.

To answer your question though, the only thing I can think of is it must be some distorted sense of dominance? I think they think it's "cool" and it attracts women. However, it attracts the worst kind of women. Therefore, I am at the same loss you are at.
