Why do you play RuneScape?

Is it to solve boredom, for the community aspect, to escape reality, what :shock:

When I did play, it was a whole variety of reasons. It was definitely a hobby. Probably to alleviate boredom, and I did enjoy the community aspect, I wouldn't say so much to escape reality. I really liked the theme and graphics of the game. I was young (and therefore kind of dumb) when I started and the game was still fresh and there wasn't nearly as much information out there as there is today, the game seemed very new and different with many new things to explore and do, it was different from anything I had ever played. I loved the progress aspect of gaining experience as well as gaining money, not to mention it was probably my first online game experience and my first game that had that large of a map or exploration aspect.

Most definitely community and friendships are a big reason. I also quite simply enjoy it a lot, inclusive of the whole grinding aspect. I know it's not for everyone though - if the game is boring you or becoming a chore, you've defeated the purpose of starting to play in the beginning!

RuneScape was also really the first game involving multiplayer and interaction elements. Before that I just kind of hopped around between single player Flash games, until someone suggested it to me when I asked a question looking for some new games to try out, and what do you know...

For me, it is simply for fun. I enjoy the diversity in the game. If I don't feel like combat, there is so much more to do in the game. The skilling side is good and you can chat to clanmates and other players and just chill out if that's what you feel like doing. Imo, there is always something to do in the game... plus with very little worth watching on TV these days, it is my nightly entertainment once my kids go to bed.

All of the above and more, I would guess. I really enjoy the community aspect of the game. I also really enjoy all the new content that is constantly being added to the game. For me it will never get stale as there is still so much of the game that I haven't even experienced. It is a HUGE game indeed. I also like the fact that whether I play for several hours in one sitting or just log in for a brief moment to do something quick, I am there to enjoy myself and work on my character. I also love the medieval RPG aspect of the game environment. I don't think I will ever stop playing as I have already invested a significant amount of effort into my character. I may play a bit less from time to time, depending on how busy I am IRL. I actually enjoy playing RS a lot.

I always take many months break from the game, sometimes even a year.
But when ever I do come back to play...
(like I did today, I'm back after 180 days away)

It's because of depression.

Just depression,
Runescape has always been something I could do to take my mind off of everything else. A distraction.
It's like therapy but cheaper.

Namely nostalgia. I started playing almost ten years ago. Kept with it ever since with plenty of long hiatuses along the way. It's a simple game for the most part. It has good story and quest lines. Other than that, no reason in particular. Becoming a member a year or so ago also added to my interest with more stuff to do. I guess just trying to meet goals one at a time still has its allurement.

Actually I started playing runescape because at the time it was the only game in its genre that I could play. I used a magnification software that didn't play nice with other games. Before long I just fell in love with it and it became my hobby. I also had to scan all of my books in college into a book scanner so that they could then be put into an audio format. Natually this was tedious and time consuming work not to mention when I was done I had to then listen to the book. Runescape kept me awake and doing somthing so that those endless hours of study didn't put me to sleep. Now its something I just really enjoy and is my favorite hobby.

When I first came back, it was as a method of release, would go kill some stuff on RS instead of fighting with my then gf etc, a poor substitute, a poor reason to play. Then I used it to fill a void, left by her leaving and other people around nicking off. Now, after some serious changes in my life, I play when I can as fun. I know, RS isn't fun all that, but hitting goals I have set is nice.
